Let's Change the World

by Susan Ashton

It seems like so often we don’t want to do anything unless we can do a big something that will cause big changes in our lives or those around us.

The task of changing the world can be overwhelming if we look at all that needs to be done, the many that are hurting, lost, helpless and hopeless; but if we take a lesson from the starfish story I believe we can be more focused, and have hope that the little things do make a difference. If we willingly look only at what we can do or say each day, and do that one thing that God places in our hearts to do, touch the lives that God places in our path, speak that one word of life that he gives us for the one hurting person we see in the grocery, at the laundry, at work or wherever our paths cross, the world will be changed and God’s Kingdom will advance and the devil’s kingdom will recede and the captive will be set free.

Zephaniah 4:10 says not to despise small beginnings; you never know what God will do with a small act of obedience done in faith.

As memory serves, here is how the story goes— it seems there was a young man walking on a long stretch of beach. He came upon an elderly man who was busy picking up starfish as they rolled in with the waves. As quickly as he could, he threw them back into the water. The young man asked the older one what he was doing. ‘I’m throwing these starfish back into the water so they don’t die’ the older man replied. The young man looked down the beach and as far as he could see there were starfishes. He said to the older man, “it’s overwhelming, there are too many, you can never make a difference!”

“I can make a difference to this one’ he said as he bent over, picked up another starfish and threw it back into the water.

The Kingdom is built one to one. One act of Kindness can be the turning point in a person’s life. Keep at it! You never know when you are making a difference to ‘the one’
